About Us

Founded in 1919, First National Bank of Lawrence County grew from a modest single-branch operation to a multi-branch community bank. When the bank first opened its doors in Black Rock, AR, it held just under $55,000 in assets. Today, it proudly manages nearly $300 million – a testament to over a century of steady growth and trust.

In the depths of the Great Depression, First National opened its Walnut Ridge location to ensure the people of Lawrence County had access to reliable financial services when they needed them most. At a time when falling crop prices, loan defaults, and cash shortages devastated local families and businesses, the bank continued to extend credit and protect deposits — standing strong while others faltered.

That same spirit of resilience and commitment is reflected in the bank’s extraordinary leadership continuity. In over 100 years, just five presidents have guided First National. For more than 30 years, Milton B. Smith has served as president — first taking the role at just 26 years old, making him one of the youngest bank presidents in the country. Under his leadership, the bank has thoughtfully expanded its footprint with new branches in Hoxie (2001), Pocahontas (2002), Bono (2008), Imboden (2017), Pocahontas-Thomasville (2018), and most recently, a loan production office in Jonesboro (2025).

In 2024, a meaningful transition took place as First National Bank of Lawrence County became First National Bank of Commerce. The name change reflected the bank’s growing service area while preserving its identity, values, and ownership. Customers experienced no change in the people or service they relied on — only a name better suited to represent who the bank serves today.

While many Arkansas towns lost their local banks, First National remained – earning the loyalty of generations. For more than 100 years, the bank has served exclusively in Northeast Arkansas. That commitment has made First National more than just a bank – it’s a familiar face and true neighbor.
